Point of Sale Trends to Consider This Summer

ComputerWithChainRM
Point-of-sale systems have made life much easier for retail owners in an increasingly fast-paced economy. As this summer gets into full swing, PoS developers continue to improve their software to perform even more functions. Take a look at some of the ways you can incorporate the latest advancements into your store.

Trends to Take Advantage Of

If there’s anything customers value, it’s time. Mobile PoS systems make it easier for shoppers to select and pay for their purchases via the sale software on an employee’s tablet. Skipping the cash register line altogether is a dream come true for the time-crunched consumer. It saves your business time as well, enabling you to find relevant data on your inventory and the patron’s own shopping history straight from your all-purpose device.

You don’t even have to be a massive, cutting-edge household name to get in on this trend. New systems (like TouchSuite’s Firefly and Ingenico’s smart tabletPoS) are designed specifically for small businesses, so they can start reaping the rewards of state-of-the-art sales software with mobile compatibility.

Other useful trends that empower the customer while predicting sales include iBeacons and shopping-enabled social media. While these are not PoS systems, they work to bring more shoppers through your door. Beacons send mobile notifications (such as announcements of discounts) when customers are nearby, and social apps help shoppers keep track of where they can get the items on their wish lists through omnichannel integration.

Mobile PoS is currently a noticeable trend in tech-focused stores, but it’s picking up steam as a viable checkout method in the retail industry. Not only do such innovations save time, they are also better than older payment methods at securing monetary info from data thieves.

Mistakes from 2014 to Avoid

As with any new venture, mobile PoS has had some stumbles to overcome. The major concern in 2014 was the security of the new software. PoS-focused malware is nothing new, but the prevalence of the Backoff malware family has proved just how important it is to make sure that newer technology is armored against data invasion.

Therefore, the biggest mistake from 2014 that forward-thinking retailers will wish to avoid is that of underestimating malware developers. With evolving software gaining the ability to compromise cloud data and overcome two-factor authentication, retailers should never get too comfortable with their existing security systems. Just like technology itself, the measures protecting that technology can always be improved.

Problems to be aware of include phishing attacks, software that hasn’t been updated recently, and disgruntled employees who know their way around a computer. Not only your own security, but that of your PoS vendor, is crucial to keeping your customers’ data safe. A highly recommended defensive strategy is to whitelist your system, only permitting it to perform certain functions instead of running the full range of programs it’s capable of. For more detailed security measures you can take, it would be wise to discuss your options with a reputable computer security consultant.

The good news is that it is relatively easier for smaller businesses to stay ahead of the security curve. While national corporations may seem impenetrable because of their sheer size and positions of leadership, last year’s Target breach showed otherwise. The security advantages of being an SMB include a closer connection with your IT professionals, faster PCI compliance, and fewer obstacles to an across-the-board software upgrade. All of these make it harder for hackers to keep up with you than with larger companies, whose technological progress is often lumbering by comparison.

Different Formats to Accomplish Your Marketing Objectives

You may not have the budget to accomplish the impressive technological feats of Nike and Burberry, but you can be a part of the future of retail nonetheless. Converting your operations to mobile and managing your inventory that way is only going to get easier. As businesses prepare to accept contactless payment alongside traditional magnetic cards, in the famous EMV liability shift, this may be the best time to implement upgrades that will put you ahead of the competition.

If you run a high-traffic boutique, the right system will help you build an important reputation for having fast and competent service. In time-consuming industries like hairdressing or furniture shopping, the convenience of your system will add value to your clients’ lives and justify their choice to patronize your business.

If you have already implemented the latest PoS technology in your business, how has it affected your everyday proceedings? If you’re still researching and observing the impact of these trends on others, what considerations would you like to have met before you commit to a system?

Remember how receipts used to look like back in the day when you had to physically write everything down?

Today, paperless receipts are now common in American Retail. It is beneficial for both the consumer and the retailer because it is cost effective, more secure, and it offers the opportunity to extend the customer relationship and attach an email address to sales transactions.

How To Use Technology To Provide A Better Customer Experience

By Scott Kreisberg, One Step Retail Solutions

I’ve been in the retail industry for more than 20 years and I can tell you that today’s modern shopper is tech-savvy and constantly on the go. With the use of technology implemented in society, shoppers expect retailers to be just as up to date, if not more, when it comes to their retail experience. It’s imperative to rapidly and effectively service your customers and maximize their in-store experience so they turn into long-term customers. In order to combat the issue of living in today’s fast-paced society, it’s vital to utilize the technologies available to you, so you can stay relevant and provide a lasting impression with your customers.

Mobile POS
There’s no secret, exceptional customer service is still the key in creating a lasting and positive shopping experience for your customer. However, 50% of shoppers today price check online, and 32% expect a retailer to be able to order an item not in stock and have it shipped to their home. Mobile POS allows sales associates to provide an in-store experience the consumer can’t get online, giving the retailer a better chance to make that sale. By using a mobile POS, sales associates can effectively move through lines faster to create a quick and positive customer service experience. Sales can be rung up at the point of decision with a mobile POS and associates can up sell by suggesting accessories to buy with a purchase. Customers feel valued when an associate can locate an item not in stock and either have it sent to them directly or at a nearby store, offering the item they’re searching for. Long checkout lines are the quickest ways to lose a customer, so having a mobile POS allows an associate to hop in and make that sale. Reduced transaction time equals more sales and happier customers.

E-Receipts
E-Receipts are booming in the retail industry because it gives you an opportunity to strategically market your campaigns with customized emails to your customers, based on what they like. A customer email address provides you powerful information because it is a fast way to learn and connect with your customers. Sending an E-Receipt allows you to send targeted email offers and advertisements based on past purchases. With HTML you can embed videos, provide web site links and consumer analytics so you know what customers are responding to. Additionally, you can assign each line item on a receipt to social media tabs, so customers can instantly post and share with their friends what and where they just made a purchase. E-Receipts are a great opportunity to connect with customers; by sending them relevant information you can position the customer to continuously come back.

Customer service innovation is being highly driven through technology today. It is key to stay up to date on current technology trends, while continuing to provide excellent customer service, which is the foundation of your business. As a retailer, you can offer discounts and specials to tempt customers, but at the end of the day the in-store shopping experience trumps all of that. The modern, tech-savvy consumer is the one driving the paradigm shift, so position yourself to the future and keep your customers coming back.

Scott Kreisberg is the Founder and CEO of One Step Retail Solutions. After graduating from college with a double Bachelors of Science degree in Finance and Marketing, Kreisberg established One Step Data in June of 1985. He consulted businesses, selling them computer hardware and software that made it easier for them to run their businesses more efficiently. In 1987, after some investigation, Kreisberg soon recognized that the retail POS/Inventory Control market was a niche yet to be developed for the small to medium-sized retailers. He came to the realization that with his passion for retail and knowledge of computer technology he could help many retailers.

Consumers Using Mobile Devices and eCommerce

It is estimated that 85 million Americans now shop on their smartphones, a staggering statistic driving retailers to understand mobile and design strategies to suit their specific business models. For the average retailer this means offering an e-commerce site and making it available in mobile formats. This is rapidly becoming an industry standard.

You may have heard the phrase "early adapter". As is the case with any evolution, change does not always come when you are ready for it.

As retail technology faces it's renaissance of sorts, following years stuck in the relative dark ages (or the 90's as you may call it), it is only an issue if you run your business in a way that is outdated and giving you a handicap against your competitors. A way of looking at it, if the average American has more power and resources to go about their day to day personal business with his nifty smartphone and iPad then many retailers in 2012... be sure to avoid cutting yourself off from the way that this world is doing business.

"..four out of five American consumers have used their smartphones to look up either a retail mobile commerce site or application." -
Retail Pro blog

Fortunately or unfortunately, the waves of change are coming up faster than many retailers may like, many are taking the "wave" and actively riding it straight on to the shore (imagine that shore is filled with over sized money instead of sand).

The above statistics are helpful to put the industry standard into perspective and will hopefully get many retailers looking to the resources available (not to mention cost-effective) to them through modern technology.

As previously noted, in order to accomplish this, a retailer needs a sound method to manage these new outlets through OMNI-friendly POS systems.

POS Lite - Is Good Enough For a Farmers Market, Good Enough For You?

Over the past year several different inexpensive and mobile systems have cropped up in the point of sale arena. The title “point of sale” has been given, which is technically an accurate statement but may conjure the wrong meaning in a retailer’s mind.

Point of Sale is defined as referring  to a “POS terminal or more generally to the hardware and software used for checkouts, the equivalent of an electronic cash register.” Technically Square, Paypal Here, Google Wallet are all point of sale solutions. The question is, does that mean that they could fit your retail technology needs? Could a system that appears to cost mere pocket change really be the tool of your dreams? Much like many other “too good to be true” options, cost does represent
quality. There is a definite market for POS Lite but a retailer must be careful to avoid the allure of the upfront price tag, especially with several of these systems stating they are a “full POS system”.

Can it handle your quantity? Per reviews it looks like these systems are best for low quantity (example: flea markets, fairs, concert sales booths and the like) transactions. The average weekly gross sales that fit for these products appear to fall around the $1,000-$4,000 a week mark. Be sure to avoid being boxed into an uncomfortably low ceiling.

Is this really going to cost less? With a set %2.75 on transactions (many charging for both credit and debit) you may end up paying more in processing fees than with a system set up with another processor; you will also be locked into that pay arrangement for the duration with no options to change to a lower rate. Research processor charges and how blanket charges on both credit and debit may affect your bottom line.
http://banking.about.com/od/checkingaccounts/a/debitvscredit.htm

Do you need/want inventory tracking and control? These systems are designed for low quantity; how many products can it properly and effectively track and monitor?

Scalability is key. Consider, you may not be able to transfer all of that data over to a future system should you have your eye on expansion. This could cause enough of a shift in your marketing
efforts and client retention that you experience long term negative side effects.

What does it integrate with/what are its features? Is it compatible with, for example, your accounting software? Also consider security systems, security cameras, open to buy, etc.

Will your information be secure? Additional concerns to fully investigate are PCI compliancy and overall security for both yourself and your customers. How secure is the system, what happens to your clients data and how often/easy is it to hack? Check reviews, and review what your responsibilities are when you are taking financial information. Many POS Lite systems don’t focus on security, this responsibility will fall on you to ensure your clients credit card data
is safely handled.
https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/security_standards/getting_started.php

A safe rule of thumb is to spend  2% of your annual gross sales on POS. If 2% comes out to over a few thousand dollars you should consider a system that also handles inventory tracking/control, has increased reporting features and is scalable. This will save you in man hours, waste, loss, hackers, theft and costly errors. The right system could very easily make or break your store. Be sure to make the decision that will move you into the long-term.

*Lite is used loosely to represent a version of software that is an abbreviated version or has limited features. It could also be referred to as POS Diet but I thought that might be a stretch.

Back from Mrket February 2012

Now that we are all back and settled from Mrket there were some definite recurring themes that have been abuzz in the office. One was the general reaction to mobile POS, hot, hot, HOT. This is definitely a movement and we are very proud to already have our products set up to accommodate mobile POS.

Secondly, FUR IS BIG. I don’t think fur has been quite this well represented in years. Between mobile POS and fur, this should shape up to be a fuzzy... fun year in retail.

While our feet may have been falling off by the end of this, it was a good event.
